Ragging in colleges is a serious problem. Often done in the guise of welcoming the freshers, it sometimes leaves life-long scars upon whom it is perpetrated. Many would say that such atrocities happen even outside of colleges so it doesn’t mean we should stop all social activities. For instance, many people drive automobiles but only a few cause accidents; many people drink but a few behave indecently, and hence, ragging happens in many colleges and only in a few it turns nasty. A good point.
Therefore, many colleges are saying they need a middle path because they don’t have severe ragging in these colleges. Not all colleges can be painted with the same brush, so therefore the colleges should be allowed to handle different cases differently. The principals of these colleges don’t understand the gravity of the situation. Many students have died or have been physically harmed due to ragging by their seniors. Up till now it has been left to the colleges and bizarrely, some colleges have been quite lenient, so much that the authorities of these colleges should be branded as criminals. They say strict actions might harm the careers of their students. Just imagine, how can you worry about the career of a psychopathic student who takes pleasure in inflicting mental and physical torture on a new-comer? Won’t you rather see such personalities either behind bars or attending counseling sessions? And now when the Supreme Court has declared ragging as a crime some principals are claiming it to be too harsh.
Even if among thousand cases of ragging a single student is harmed, it becomes criminal. And why do they need to rag students to know them better? Every department in every college as far as I know holds a freshers party and this party is good time for introductions.
