After having a cool afternoon bath I happened to be in front of the TV watching Times Now. Some panelists said that we should hail our judicial system and some said it’s a sad day. They were talking about the two accused of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks who got acquitted today due to lack of evidence against them. Ajmal Kasab, naturally, was found guilty.
Lots of black comedy happens in our country in the name of democracy, human rights and freedom but if our courts solely depend on evidence, it’s a good thing (it didn’t happen in the Bhanwari Devi case though, and it doesn’t happen in thousands of other cases that never get reported).
If the court had to acquit the Mumbai terror attack co-accused due to lack of evidence then the fault rests upon the prosecution and as we’ve seen in many high-profile cases the prosecution often seems to be bungling up, and in most of the cases, to obviously, as if it doesn’t even bother to pretend.
Recently I saw an Anthony Hopkins movie (forgotten the name) in which he kills his young wife, and is acquitted because he outsmarts the public prosecutor. Then the boss of the prosecutor says that someone messed up and heads gotta role. Do heads role in our country if someone messes up? They don’t, and this is the fundamental problem in our country. Kisi ke baap ka kya jata hai?
