Interestingly, when this song was created, the country had a Congress government. It seems whenever they rule the country their only achievement is mehengai – inflation. Great song by the way. Listen to the lyrics carefully, they are a treat.

    Interestingly, I remember, the song Mehngayi Maar Gayi from Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, got the maximum number of points and was selected number one song of the year in Binaca Geet Mala, the programme which created history by running constantly for 40 years on radio. But, if I can remember correctly, when Ameen Sayani, the best presenter All India Radio has ever had, decided to wind-up that famous show on radio, he conducted a very special programme, showcasing the number one songs of the respective years on Binaca Geet Mala from 1971 to 1985. Even in that special prograame, which was aired years after Roti Kapda Aur Makan was released, he was not allowed to air this song on Vividh Bharti. Such is the impact of the wording of this song. Even I had great difficulty in finding the audio version of this song though, the MP3 version was not difficult to find.
