i dont think the issue is that simple. another way of over simplifying it is by holding the view that until recently, girls were never truly given independence, so where can one expect them to get it suddenly when they havent been "allowed" to have it their entire life?

I'm sure there are some who exploit the convention that doesnt require them be independent. but there are also others who try to be independent but are not given the chance of a free reign to roam in search of it. So not only do they have to deal with the pressuer of over-protective parents, but they have to deal with such criticism once they enter family life.

Its an interesting question which can only ring partly true, but its important not to forget that the question has not been entirely answered in just asking it.

nothing can be done unless the laws are tightned .. and that will never happen. it's becoming a scarier place by the day. just read in the paper that a 15 yr old girl bled to death in the city cos the people were busy attacking the errant driver ... she was lying there on the road, bleeding for a good 30 mins. she could've been saved only if someone had the good sense to take her to the hospital immediately. sorry, steered away from the topic, but this is the general state of thinking and sensitivity of the people.
